Raising the daily minimum wage to 400 baht is one of the flagship policies of the current Thai government, vowing to deliver this policy by this October. However, several organizations have been worried about the negative impacts of this move.
In an interview with Thai PBS World, the Chairwoman of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand, Vibeke Lyssand Leirvag, says that the majority of chambers are not against the policy, but the minimum wage needs to be increased gradually. As SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in poorer provinces cannot absorb the increase, some might close their companies eventually.
