The somewhat delayed SEA Games 2021 will take place from 12-23 May 2022 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The 31st edition of the Southeast Asian Games features 40 sports across 526 events. The games will bring together 5,467 athletes from 11 different nations.
“For a Stronger Southeast Asia” has been chosen to be the motto of this edition. The motto represents Vietnam’s hope, as ASEAN Chair 2020, for the region to grow stronger, and signifies the region’s strive to tackle and defeat the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia.
The event has attracted plenty of international stars. Olympic gold medalists like the Philippines’ Hidilyn Diaz and Singapore swim star Joseph Schooling will set the bar high, while world champions Loh Kean Yew (badminton) and Carlos Yulo (gymnastics) want to add to their collection of continental titles.
Let’s not also forget local hero Hoang Xuan Vinh, who won Vietnam’s first ever Olympic gold in shooting. And for the Thais, the Olympic taekwondo champion Panipak Wongpattanakit will be a hot favorite.
While traditional Olympic events such as athletics and swimming need no introduction, little-known regional sport specialties like vovinam, Esports, xiangqi, and kurash will also get a rare chance to shine.
