Numerous countries have condemned the military coup in Myanmar. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that it was a "serious blow to democratic reforms." Also, the US and UK have responded with sanctions on military officials.
Asia’s response has been more modest. China just recently blocked a UN Security Council statement condemning the coup. It has previously opposed international intervention in Myanmar, urging all sides to “resolve differences.”
Myanmar’s neighbors Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines have only said it is an “internal matter.”
Myanmar – also known as Burma – was ruled by the armed forces from 1962 until 2011. The recent coup threatens the country’s long road to civilian rule.
