Thailand’s Welfare Budget Favors State Officials

Thailand’s House of Representatives is currently considering the delayed budget bill for fiscal 2024, totaling 3.48 trillion baht (US$99 billion). Close to 1 trillion baht has been allocated for welfare spending on state officials and other citizens in the fiscal year 2024.

The welfare budget for state employees and their families is 499 billion baht, including pensions (329.4 billion baht), healthcare (84.6 billion baht), contributions to the Government Pension Fund (78.8 billion baht), education and life insurance (4.5 billion baht) and others (2.3 billion baht), 101 Public Policy Think Tank reports.

Nearly 1.8 million civil service officials will be beneficiaries, including military and police personnel. They include 1.2 million state employees. In addition, 4.6 million family members of state officials and 800,000 retired state officials are covered by state healthcare.

Meanwhile, the welfare provision for the rest of the citizens, around 66.2 million people, totals 520 billion baht, including healthcare (152.7 billion baht), pension for the elderly (93.3 billion baht), education subsidy (83.7 billion baht), contribution to the social security fund (65.5 billion baht), welfare card scheme for the poor (50 billion baht) as well as others (82.6 billion baht).
