Northeast’s pride, Hom Mali 105 rice, has won the 13th World’s Best Rice Award for the second year in a row.

Eleven types of rice from Thailand, the US, China, India, Vietnam and Myanmar participated in the competition. It was already the seventh time that Thai rice won the main trophy.

Thailand is one of the top exporters of rice in the world. Its rice exports are expected to exceed 6 million tons this year, followed by 7-7.5 million tons in 2022. This would make Thailand the world’s second largest rice exporter after India and ahead of Vietnam.

Jasmine rice (Thai hom mali or Thai fragrant rice) is grown primarily in Thailand, Cambodia (phka rumduol or Cambodian jasmine rice), Laos, and southern Vietnam. It is moist and soft in texture when cooked, with a slightly sweet flavor. The grains cling and are somewhat sticky when cooked.

Thai jasmine rice has a slender shape. The two types of Thai jasmine rice are white and brown. In Thailand, it is thought that only the northeastern provinces of SurinBuriram, and Sisaket can produce high quality hom mali.
