Super typhoon Noru is heading towards the Philippines and is on track to slam into the heavily populated main island of Luzon, forcing the evacuations of coastal towns.
The typhoon has maximum sustained wind speeds of 195 kilometers an hour after an unprecedented “explosive intensification”, the state weather forecaster says.
The storm is the strongest to hit the Philippines this year. It is expected to continue strengthening as it lands around 80 kilometers northeast of the capital Manila.
