Southeast Asia Records Fewer Dengue Fever Cases

Underreporting and extensive social lockdowns could explain why many Southeast Asian countries have recorded fewer cases of dengue fever in 2021 than previous years, experts say.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that several countries are enjoying improved dengue fever situations this year, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Laos.

Despite the positive outlook in 2021, the dengue story in this region remains a problematic one. The long-term trends are all up, and therapies together with vaccines are still a distant hope.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. It is spread by several species of mosquitoes of the Aedes Genus, mostly by Aedes Aegypti.
