In Thailand, the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta) has announced that Bang Kachao will be declared a special sustainable tourism area.
The plan is to create a tourism environment that benefits local residents while causing the minimum effects on the economy, society, and natural surroundings. According to Dasta, sustainable tourism can be achieved by adopting the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) issued by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Bang Krachao is an artificial island that lies south of Bangkok in Phra Pradaeng District of Samut Prakan. It is particularly important for the capital because it absorbs up to 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and releases about 6 million tonnes of oxygen a day.
The Thai cabinet will consider the green plan later in 2021.
