Thailand’s Phuket Municipality has asked Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for this popular tourist destination to become a special administrative organization or “special city,” Phuket Mayor Saroj Angkanapilas says.
The current administrative system makes Phuket inflexible, delaying the resolution of problems, and lacking opportunities for urban development to compete.
Phuket generates over 300 billion baht in tourism revenue and has set itself a target of 400 billion baht for this year. However, it is unable to address numerous issues in the city because of inconsistent regulations.
The large influx of people to Phuket, including more than 10 million tourists and a transient population, is putting a strain on the province’s basic infrastructure.
