Residents in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh have been facing water shortages for the past few days due to insufficient water supply and high demand. In some areas, the water shortage has been going on for weeks.

The affected suburbs are Svay Pak, Kork Roka, Kraing Thnong, Samraong Krom, Snor, Phloeung Cheh Rotes, Pongtoek, Kantork, Kamboul, Choam Chao, Kakap, Prey Veng, Prey Sar, Stung Meanchey, Prek Kampoes, Prek Hor, Svay Rolum, Prek Thmey, and Kbal Koh.

Prek Pnov district governor Them Sam An says district authorities have been distributing water for over two months, especially to those in Kork Roka, Poan Saing, and Ponhea Poan.

“We are concerned about the water shortage and we are trying to help the people.”

The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) on Thursday asked residents to understand and be patient as clean water is not enough. It also promised that “it will solve this problem systematically and step by step from May.”

PPWSA said the shortage of water was because water demand has increased to more than 890,000 cubic meters a day, while it could only generate about 640,000 cubic meters a day.
