In an effort to address the shortage of locally-produced rice, the Malaysian government has implemented a restriction on the sale of local white rice, limiting purchases to 100kg per customer, says the Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Azman Mahmood. This purchase limit would be implemented until the supply of local white rice stabilizes.
Azman notes that the local rice supply depended on the quantity of locally harvested padi.
โThe padi harvest in Selangor has already concluded and now it is happening in Kedah. We will only know this yearโs yield at the end of October when Kedahโs harvest concludes.”
Azman adds that there would be no issues with the rice supply because the country has a stock of about six months for imported white rice and can still import rice from Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Cambodia.
