As a sign of springtime, someiyoshino cherry trees have started blooming in Tokyo, the Japan Metrological Agency announced Tuesday. This is 10 days earlier than in an average year and six days earlier than last year.

“Hanami” or flower viewing is an ingrained part of Japanese culture. Having food and drinks with family and friends under cherry blossoms in full bloom to share the joy of the season is part of this.
