The number of foreign visitors to Japan between January-June hit a record high of 17,777,200 for the first half of the year, and June saw another record of 3,135,600 visitors in a single month, the Japan National Tourism Organization reports.
The record numbers are partly due to the depreciation of the yen.
Most of the visitors to Japan were from South Korea, China, and Taiwan. Since February, the number of visitors for each month has exceeded that of the same month in 2019, when the previous record was set before the coronavirus pandemic.
The number of visitors this year might reach 35 million, and the amount spent by tourists ¥8 trillion.
The government has set goals of 60 million visitors and ¥15 trillion by 2030.
