The Finnish technology sector is looking at its carbon handprint. Instead of carbon footprint, which refers to greenhouse gas emissions caused by a product, the term “carbon handprint” refers to the positive environmental impact a product makes throughout its lifecycle.
The idea of a carbon handprint originates in Finland. It was developed by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Lappeenranta University with support from the Climate Leadership Coalition.
Making products 10-15% more efficient results in big carbon decreases globally. It also creates business opportunities. Finnish innovation focuses on quality, sustainability measures help the country’s tech sector keep its global prominence.
Now that the goal and timeframe have been set, the government, the business community, and its citizens can work together to reach the goal.
“It comes through the millions of decisions that are made every day at all levels,” Sitra’s senior advisor Oras Tynkkynen says.
