Building Geopolitical Risk into Your ERM

Companies have traditionally assessed geopolitical and sustainability risks when a specific event or decision required it – for example, ahead of a major investment or an IPO. That is changing. Across Asia and other major markets, geopolitical and sustainability risks are becoming ongoing business considerations rather than issues assessed only when a specific event occurs. New regulations, shifting policies and a more unpredictable global environment are increasing the pressure on companies to understand and manage these exposures continuously. Yet in many organisations, these risks still sit outside the core Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework and are addressed through separate or ad hoc assessments. This can leave important exposures – from supply chain dependencies and market concentration to regulatory and political change – outside regular management and board-level risk discussions. So how can companies move from reacting to individual developments to systematically incorporating geopolitical and sustainability risk into business decisions, risk appetite and board-level discussions? Led by Reema Bhattacharya , Head of Asia Risk Insight, Verisk Maplecroft , this roundtable will use real-world, anonymised examples to explore a practical question: What does it take to integrate geopolitical and sustainability risk into an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework that senior management and the board can meaningfully use to make informed decisions? Key take-aways for workshop participants include: Understand how geopolitical and sustainability risks are shifting from ad hoc assessments to recurring enterprise-level business risks. Explore how these risks can be integrated into existing ERM frameworks, rather than managed through separate workstreams. Assess whether your organisation’s risk appetite, dependencies and concentration risks adequately reflect geopolitical and sustainability exposure. Identify the triggers and indicators that should prompt management and boards to reassess risk as external conditions change. Discuss what senior management and boards actually need to translate complex geopolitical developments into actionable business decisions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences, challenges and questions to the table. Guided by our risk expert and drawing on her extensive experience in the field, the session will be a practical peer-to-peer discussion rather than a formal presentation or prescriptive methodology.
