The 187-km-long freeway from Phnom Penh is a 2 billion USD investment by the China Road and Bridge Corporation. It is also one of the results of cooperation between China and Cambodia under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). More than one million vehicles had traveled on Cambodia’s first-ever expressway in the first three months since its inauguration in October last year.
During last week’s visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen that China will keep encouraging more Chinese enterprises to invest in the kingdom, help in the construction of the Sihanoukville Special Economic zone, and support building transportation infrastructure.
The freeway is only one of the examples of the growing cooperation between these two countries. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade pact and the China-Cambodia Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) entered into force in January 2022. According to the Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy to Cambodia, the trade volume between China and Cambodia hit $14.5 billion from January to November 2022, a year-on-year increase of 19.1%.
