China’s internet users approached 1.1 billion at the end of June, up 7.42 million from December.
Around 78% of mainland Chinese citizens were connected to the internet, and over one third of new internet users were drawn to short video applications as of June, according to a report by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC).
Entertainment and social needs were the main drivers of internet usage in China. 95% of web users in the country had viewed short videos, which are available on popular platforms, including ByteDance’s Douyin, Kuaishou, and Tencent Holdings’ app WeChat.
Almost half of those who joined the internet in the first half of this year were between the ages of 10-19.
