Cambodia is moving up the ranks to become the world’s 8th largest garment exporter as per data from the World Trade Organisation. This is a big improvement from 2021 when a WTO report had pegged the country at the 11th spot.
In 2021, the world’s top ten exporters were China, the European Union, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Turkey, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Pakistan.
According to recent data by Statista, China had more than a quarter of the world’s garment export pie (31.7%) followed by the European Union (27.1%), Bangladesh Vietnam, Turkey, India, Indonesia, and Cambodia (1.6%).
However, data shows that Cambodia still has some catching up to do compared to its Southeast Asian counterparts like Indonesia and Vietnam.
Southeast Asia’s production in total is still only a quarter of what China exports at $182.4 billion.
