ASEAN Forum Emphasizes Urban Growth, Digital, and Green Transition Priorities

The ASEAN Future Forum 2026 concluded, bringing together over 1,200 delegates to discuss regional resilience and future development. Key outcomes from the forum, particularly the ASEAN Cities Leadership Conference, signal significant opportunities in urban development, digital transformation, and green infrastructure across Southeast Asia.

The inaugural ASEAN Cities Leadership Conference, a key initiative of the forum, convened over 250 delegates from 25 regional localities. Discussions highlighted cities as critical engines for economic growth, innovation, and digital and green development.

Participants acknowledged common urban challenges including climate change, development disparities, and skilled worker shortages for green and digital transitions. These challenges were framed as opportunities for enhanced cooperation and joint solution development, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and data security.

Two primary directives emerged: leveraging technology and digital infrastructure with modern governance for people-centric services, and prioritising green infrastructure, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Both underscore the vital role of private sector participation in driving innovation and transformation.

## Business relevance

Nordic companies specialising in smart city solutions, sustainable urban planning, renewable energy, waste management, water technology, and climate resilience will find significant market demand in ASEAN cities. The emphasis on digital infrastructure, AI, and data security also presents opportunities for Nordic tech firms and cybersecurity providers. Furthermore, the focus on skilled worker shortages in green and digital transitions suggests a need for education technology, vocational training partnerships, and HR solutions where Nordic expertise is highly valued.

For Southeast Asian companies, these discussions highlight the strategic importance of integrating sustainable practices and digital innovation into their growth models. Collaborations with Nordic partners can provide access to advanced technologies, best practices in green development, and expertise in building resilient, people-centric urban environments, fostering mutual growth and knowledge exchange.
