Are You Eating Blueberries or Bilberries?

Did you know that we gather from the forests and commonly call blueberries in Finland are actually bilberries, (metsä)mustikka in Finnish)? Garden blueberries are called pensasmustikka in Finnish, or bush blueberries. These two are similar, but different berries.

About 50 different berries are growing in Finland, 37 of which are edible. Blueberry – or bilberry- is one of the most common and also most loved berries.

An amount of 150-200 millions of kilos of blueberries are picked on a yearly basis within the country. Some of these end up also in Asia.

Blueberries have great health benefits. They are superfoods that have beneficial effects for our immune system and our metabolism. Researches link blueberries with the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and they could even have a positive impact on memory, preventing diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
